Meeting the Challenge
Investigating the Earth’s Treasures
What are the properties of earth materials?
· Earth materials are solid rocks, soils, and liquid water.
· Rock is composed of different combinations of materials.
· Rocks come in many different shapes and sizes; boulders, pebbles, sand.
· Rocks can be sedimentary, metamorphic, or igneous.
What is a fossil?
· Some organisms that once lived on earth have become extinct.
What do fossils tell us about Iowa and our earth?
· During the Devonian period, Iowa was covered in shallow water.
· Fossils remaining when the water receded in Iowa were: brachiopods, gastropods, crinoids,
bryozoans, horn coral, and colony corals.
What are the layers of the earth?
· The layers of the earth are the crust, core, and mantle.
Exploring Electricity and Magnetism
What is magnetism and how do magnets interact?
· Magnetism is the force where objects are attracted or repelled to one another.
What is electricity?
· Electricity is the flow of electrical charge.
· Insulators and conductors affect the electric flow.
· Electricity can be static or current.
· Electricity can help us to meet challenges such as the use of electric cars or prosthetic limbs.
Discovering the Brain and the Nervous System
What does the brain and nervous system do?
· Different parts of your brain control the various functions of the body.
· The spinal cord and nerves carry the messages to all parts of the body.
What do you need to do to keep your brain safe and healthy?
· The choices you make affect the health and safety of your brain.
What are different ways to show intelligence?
· People learn in different ways.
· Everyone has unique talents and abilities.
